In the early hours of a Monday morning, a routine vehicle stop in Apple Valley turned into a foot chase and a juvenile arrest. A 16-year-old from the area has now seen the stark interior of the High Desert Juvenile Detention and Assessment Center following a chase that ended with him tossing a non-serialized handgun over a fence. San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department reports the incident occurred on Monday, at the crossroads of Kiowa Road and Bear Valley Road.
Deputies C. Hubbard and D. Ramires of the Apple Valley Police Department initially stopped the silver Nissan for what would usually be a minor traffic infraction—running a red light. However, the situation escalated quickly as a teenager in the vehicle made a hasty exit and attempted to outrun the law. While deputies eventually managed to apprehend the youth, they had to carefully handle the added discovery of a high-capacity magazine near the stopped car.
According to the official bulletin, the young suspect was arrested for "carrying a loaded firearm in public," a violation of PC 25850. It's a steep curve from a red light offense to a significant weapons charge that could indelibly mark a young life. The department has urged anyone with further information regarding this case to come forward, providing several contact options, including the We-Tip Hotline for anonymous tips.
