On Wednesday afternoon, a police shooting in Walnut Park resulted in the death of an armed robbery suspect, sparking an investigation that is currently being led by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The South Gate Police Department indicated that their officers were responding to an armed robbery report that occurred several days prior when they encountered the suspect near the intersection of Seville Avenue and Walnut Street at approximately 12:30 p.m. This was confirmed in a statement obtained by NBC Los Angeles.
The confrontation escalated when the man allegedly pointed a gun at officers, leading the police to fire at him inside his vehicle. The aftermath, captured by SkyFOX, showed a green van with at least five bullet holes in the windshield, pinned in a parking lot by a gray Jeep. Unidentified by the officials, a weapon reportedly belonging to the suspect was found on the ground.
Adding to the narrative, ABC7 reported that the suspect was linked to two armed robberies from the prior week, involving an exchange gone awry and subsequent robberies at gunpoint. SGPD Chief Darren Arakawa provided details, saying, "There was an agreement to meet up and it went south from there," with the suspect displaying a firearm as he attempted to flee the first victim. The crimes occurred minutes apart, and detectives were able to locate the suspect thanks to evidence left at the scene, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Daniel Vizcarra, whom ABC7 interviewed.
The engagement with law enforcement ended in Huntington Park, where the suspect, seated in a van, gestured with a gun at the officers, an action that met with more than a dozen shots fired by police, culminating in the suspect's death, as CBS News Los Angeles elaborated. Two guns were retrieved from the scene, and no officer injuries were reported. "He was in a vehicle, once they tried to make contact with him he produced a firearm and an officer-involved shooting occurred," stated an SGPD officer during a press conference. Images from SkyCal showed the scene with evidence markers around the van, its doors ajar, and what appeared to be a black handgun on the ground next to it.
The name of the suspect remains unreleased, and as the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge about the circumstances leading up to and including the shooting. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detectives are assisting with the ongoing investigation. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
