Washington D.C.'s Ward 5 is set to gain new housing options along with a hefty investment in healthcare resources, thanks to a deal orchestrated by Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb. The announcement made by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) confirms a revised proposal for the sale of the Providence Hospital campus. This deal will introduce both market-rate and affordable housing units, directly contributing to the District's efforts to mitigate the ongoing housing crunch.
Under the terms of the agreement, Vision PH Associates is to purchase the largely vacant 22-acre Providence campus, a commitment that is expected to transform the area. To ensure the interests of the community are safeguarded, the OAG has mandated the preservation of "$5 million in health services funding" and the establishment of an urgent care center within the site. In these negotiations, Schwalb has worked to both secure and to also ensure the continued provision of crucial health services for the residents of the District.
The specifics of the plan reveal that not only will thousands of square feet be repurposed for housing, but also that significant emphasis has been placed on the healthcare fabric of the neighborhood.
Moreover, a point of relief for many is that the sale is not anticipated to disrupt ongoing health services currently operated by providers other than Providence Hospital. As the provision of healthcare must continue to evolve, this deal stands as a symbol of progress—ensuring residents have access to both their homes and to also adequate medical care.
