As spring festivals approach in Austin, the City of Austin has issued safety guidelines for pedicab riders. Passengers are required to wear safety helmets and follow basic rules to ensure a safe ride through the streets, according to the City of Austin.
"Only 3 passengers are allowed per pedicab," the city announces, noting that children under 6 must sit on a guardian's lap. Pedicab operators are required to follow traffic signals and lighting rules, especially after dark. The speed limit is set at 15 mph on open roads, with a reduced speed of 5 mph in crowded areas. A 3-foot distance should be maintained from pedestrians, increasing to 5-7 feet where space allows, as reported by the City of Austin.
As Austin’s springtime festivities approach, the city emphasizes the importance of safety when using pedicabs. If a pedicab driver is observed disregarding safety standards, the public is encouraged to “don’t let it slide--call 3-1-1 and report it.” This ensures accountability and helps maintain a safe environment in downtown Austin, as stated by the City of Austin.
