In the pre-dawn hours of South Philadelphia, a group of would-be thieves nearly made away with a substantial haul of meat valued at approximately $55,000. Yesterday, the incident occurred when suspects attempted to commandeer boxes of beef from a stationary tractor-trailer outside the Sysco warehouse, according to NBC Philadelphia. The police got wind of the situation just in time to intervene and were briefly able to give chase to a separate getaway vehicle before deciding to abort the pursuit near 4th Street and Girard Avenue.
The authorities indicated that the box truck used by the suspects in their attempted heist was stolen. Despite the interruption by law enforcement, no arrests were made quickly following the incident. Though brazen, this attempt resulted in no beef being taken from the trailer. This was due in part to the alert actions of the truck driver, who, according to a FOX29 article, noticed the commotion when his vehicle began to shake and subsequently informed the police.
When officers arrived, this prompted the suspects to flee. Although they managed to evade immediate capture, the suspect's SUV was left behind, full of the would-be stolen meat. The found cargo contained 184 boxes of beef, as highlighted by FOX29. Further complicating the police's investigation is that the getaway vehicle had paper tags, a detail that has not pointed investigators in any fruitful direction for their search. However, there is some hope that surveillance cameras in the area might provide further aid in tracking down the suspects, according to 6ABC.
