Today, nurses at Butler Memorial Hospital are taking to the streets in an informational picket, amplifying their demands for safer working conditions. The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses & Allied Professionals (PASNAP) has expressed grave concern over the reported increase in violent incidents within the hospital walls. One recent and alarming example cited by a union spokesperson involved a nursing assistant who had her teeth knocked out on the job earlier this month, as reported by CBS News Pittsburgh.
Adding their collective voice to the chorus of concern, nurses say that they feel left unprotected by the Independence Health System. They claim that management is attempting to undermine their contract while turning a blind eye to the lack of security. With contract negotiations underway, these frontline workers are emphatically calling for implementing metal detectors at all hospital entrances, as only the emergency room currently has such a security measure. Picketing is underway along East Brady Street, and elected officials are expected to show support by joining the nurses at noon.
On the negotiation front, a representative for the Independence Health System conveyed to CBS News Pittsburgh, "We respect our nurses' right to voice their concerns, and we remain committed to ongoing dialogue to ensure the best outcomes for our employees, patients, and community."
Sharing their stakes in the matter, Shannon Herrington, RN and vice president of Pennsylvania Independent Nurses, lamented to WPXI the need for a proactive approach to safety for both healthcare workers and patients. Echoing the same sentiment, "Safety isn’t negotiable,” says Emergency Department nurse Cara Buckley RN. “It isn’t an option or a bargaining chip. Nursing is a team sport. If you hurt one of us, you hurt all of us and we stand united for each other and our patients in making Butler Memorial Hospital a safer place to work and to heal."
The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses & Allied Professionals has also taken to social media to showcase their demonstration, posting images and updates from the scene under the hashtag #UnionStrong #Picket #ProtectNurses, underscoring their resolve to fight for respect and workplace safety.
