In Detroit, the Motor City Match program continues its role in supporting the local economy with the opening of Someday, a business that combines art and cuisine. Founded by Cass Tech alumni Jantae’ Spinks and Samuel Trotter, who have collaborated with companies like Google and Telfar, Someday is the 180th brick-and-mortar venture to launch with the support of Motor City Match, a program aimed at promoting entrepreneurship.
Located in Milwaukee Junction, this venture offers patrons a selection of pastries while also featuring diverse art exhibits. "Everything is divine. We made the decision to come back, and we are here to complete a mission," Spinks told the City of Detroit. The space strives to meld culinary and visual arts grounded in Detroit's local flavor while extending its reach to a global audience, a reflection of Spinks and Trotter's international escapades. Trotter expands on the intent behind Someday, noting that its goal is not just to "promote pretty pictures," but to foster cultural dialogues that resonate with global familiarity and local authenticity.
Someday is built on three core pillars: serving as a Business-to-Business Creative Studio that produces artistic work for local and international brands, a Business-to-Consumer hybrid gallery, and a mentorship resource for aspiring artists and chefs. The Deputy Mayor of Detroit, Melia Howard, recognizes the importance of such grassroots initiatives, affirming, "Someday represents the kind of homegrown talent and innovation we’re working to nurture in Detroit." According to the City of Detroit, Someday has already received a $40,000 boost from Motor City Match to aid in renovation and décor, cementing the support and belief in its novel concept.
Motor City Match collaborates with a range of partners, including the Ford Foundation, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and other contributors, to support economic growth in Detroit. The program has awarded $19.1 million in cash grants, with 85% directed to minority-owned businesses and 70% to women-owned businesses, playing a key role in the city's entrepreneurial development.
