In a concerning turn of events, a man was detained after driving his vehicle into a crowd of protesters at a Tesla dealership in West Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred last Saturday afternoon and was part of a reportedly peaceful demonstration against Elon Musk's role with the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Protesters were forced to move swiftly to avoid being struck by the assailant, identified as 44-year-old Andrew Dutil. WESH reports that Dutil now faces one charge of aggravated assault.
According to police, Dutil's approach was calculated as he "drove his vehicle, jumping the curb onto the sidewalk at a slow rate of speed into a crowd of protestors." Participants at the protest described an earlier encounter with Dutil, where he allegedly drove by, yelling at protesters before eventually returning to commit the act. One protester, Karen Holland, said she was "in fear for her life and believed she was going to get struck by the vehicle," as per an interview by ABC News. Despite the chaos, no injuries were reported.
The broader context of these protests includes a series of vandalism and violent acts towards Tesla vehicles and dealerships, with the FBI noting incidents in at least nine states. These acts span from arson to gunfire, with the bureau describing them as likely conducted by lone offenders and mainly occurring at night.
Dutil has been arrested and is awaiting legal proceedings. Meanwhile, Tesla has not responded publicly to this string of protests and attacks targeting its establishments and products.
