Chester County is buzzing with a renewed dedication to agriculture as it embraces the growth of AgConnect, an initiative designed to support local farmers and agribusinesses. This expansion was celebrated earlier this week at Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs, an event that boasted the presence of Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and other noteworthy figures in the agricultural sphere. According to Chester County's official announcement, AgConnect now offers more financial opportunities and workforce support, amongst other resources to bolster the farming community.

“Agriculture is big business in Chester County – worth $736 million – so it is important that we focus on promoting the significance and value of farming, while lending support to farmers and related agricultural businesses," Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz and Eric Roe collectively emphasized at the event. They further underscored the multifaceted assistance provided by the program, starting from land preservation to adopting new farming technologies and workforce training. Notably, AgConnect has evolved under the partnership with Chester County Government and the Chester County Economic Development Council to actively execute the Agriculture Economic Development Strategic Plan set forth by the commissioners.

The CEO of the CCEDC, Gary Smith, did refer to AgConnect as a "full-service economic development partnership" that aims to grow agriculture, Pennsylvania's foundational industry. Smith elaborated, “This public-private collaborative will leverage resources and become the nucleus for supporting the development of our Ag producers and encourage consumers to support our Agriculture legacy,” as stated by the Chester County.

The significance of initiatives like AgConnect cannot be understated in the quest to sustain a thriving agriculture sector. Secretary Redding shared, “By connecting farmers, agribusinesses, and students to essential resources and support, this program is ensuring that our agriculture sector continues to thrive." He spoke highly of the program's role in mentorship, business development, and fostering career opportunities for the next generation of farmers. The program's impact is expected to reverberate throughout the state, nurturing an agricultural community that's resilient, innovative, and sustainable, as reported by the Chester County.

A highlight of the event was the Century Farm recognition bestowed upon the Matthews Family, the stewards of Milky Way Farm since 1902, shaping not just their land but the community at large over a hundred years. "It is truly an honor to recognize the Matthews family and their stewardship of Milky Way Farm, where over four generations and 100 years of dedication to agriculture have shaped not only this farm but the very foundation of the community,” Redding said, as per the Chester County. The Matthews family has diversely expanded the farm's activities, engaging in educational programs and agritourism to ensure the farm's legacy endures.

Reflecting on this milestone, Carolyn Matthews Eaglehouse expressed the family's gratitude: “We appreciate the support of the community and government at all levels that has helped us sustain agriculture, so that we will continue farming for future generations.” This sentiment encapsulates the core goal of AgConnect and the broader agricultural efforts in Chester County. More information on AgConnect can be found at their website, which details available farming resources and links to local produce.
