A child was injured following a roof collapse at a West Philadelphia day care on Friday, according to fire department officials. The incident occurred at a childcare facility near 60th and Market streets, around 4:07 p.m., as reported by 6abc Philadelphia. The child was taken to the hospital and is currently in stable condition; fortunately, no other injuries were reported.
Details on what led to the collapse are still under investigation, but the scene was described by on-site media, with images of wires and debris from the ceiling visible within the building. In a statement obtained by NBC10 Philadelphia, the area was cordoned off with yellow police tape following the incident, emphasizing the severity of the situation, and tiles and wires could be seen hanging from a part of the ceiling. The fire department had the situation under control shortly before 4:20 p.m.
Visuals from the scene, captured by the Action Cam of 6abc Philadelphia, showed parts of the building's interior compromised, with the ceiling material dangling precariously over the space where children are cared for during the day.
After the collapse, children at the Growing Together 4 Learning Center were observed waiting on a bus. According to a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Fire Department, as quoted in a report by CBS News Philadelphia, all other individuals at the daycare were accounted for, and no further injuries were reported. The quick response and handling of the situation by emergency crews ensured that by 4:18 p.m., the incident was managed, and the immediate threat to the children and staff had been abated.
