The Cleveland Browns are crunching numbers and shuffling contracts ahead of the NFL's new league year, and center stage in this financial ballet is the team's controversial quarterback, Deshaun Watson. In a reported move to free up some much-needed salary cap space, the Browns have restructured Watson's hefty contract, creating almost $36 million in cap space for the 2025 spree of free agency.
As per ESPN's Field Yates, Cleveland has converted $44 million of Watson’s 2025 base salary into a signing bonus, adding a void year at the contract's end in 2029. Meanwhile, the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero notes that the Browns have gotten the bulk of Watson's fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million deal off their books – this season, they're only coughing up a minimum salary. In 2026, $46 million will come due.
But the contract hocus-pocus doesn't come without its long-term hitches; the money's got to come from somewhere, and they’ll be feeling the cap hit for years. "Berry has essentially created a longer-term financial burden to provide some short-term relief," said a report by Sports Illustrated. The maneuvers of the Browns’ general manager, Andrew Berry, including this recent restructure and two prior ones, mean the team could be looking at over $50 million in charges post-2026.
It's important to mention, however, that Watson's 2025 season playtime is up in the air. Post-Achilles surgery in January, his recovery timeline is as clear as mud. Adding to the Browns' pressure is prepping for the NFL's legal tampering period, which kicks off this coming Monday, March 10, followed by the official 4 p.m. start to the new league year on Wednesday, March 12, as stated by WKYC Studios and echoed by Cleveland19.
