Wake Forest commuters, prepare to adjust your routes. Starting tomorrow, construction work will force lane reductions along Retail Drive, part of a broader initiative to improve road conditions and accessibility in town. From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily until mid-April, the stretch between Durham Road/NC 98 and Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 Bypass will condense down to just one lane, accommodating two-way traffic in intervals. As reported by the Town of Wake Forest, drivers might want to consider alternative paths to avoid expected delays.

The current work is a key phase of the extensive 2025 Wake Forest Road Resurfacing Project, which kicked off its concrete operations in February. Amidst this phase, crews will aim to quickly install updated ADA ramps and conduct necessary replacements and repairs to sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. To keep things moving as smoothly as possible, signage and flaggers will be on site to direct traffic and ensure motorist safety.

Funded by the 2022 Wake Forest Bond Referendum, this project comprises a must-needed overhaul of 15 local streets and roadways. While concrete work is the focus for now, come June, the project will switch gears to begin asphalt work. The scope of these improvements is comprehensive; besides laying down new surfaces, it encompasses a slew of full-depth patching and roadway repairs. Significant to both safety and compliance, some existing black ADA ramps will be replaced with yellow mats, aligning with national standards.

Residents and commuters should keep abreast of this ongoing project and plan their travel accordingly over the next several weeks. For more information and updates on the ongoing roadway work, visit the Town of Wake Forest's official website.
