A Riverside County man has entered a guilty plea for trafficking large quantities of cocaine and heroin, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith. Jose Miguel Perez, a 42-year-old resident of Corona, was apprehended while driving on Interstate 5 in Fresno County, where deputies discovered a hefty stash of drugs concealed within his vehicle.
During the stop, law enforcement officers unearthed two hidden compartments within Perez's car, one in the ceiling and another in the roof. The compartments contained 44 kilograms of cocaine and 10 kilograms of heroin, among other narcotics. An additional 2 kilograms of ketamine were also seized in a operation that involved the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration, as stated in a Justice Department press release.
Perez now faces a minimum sentence of 10 years and a potential life sentence following his plea. The specific terms of his punishment will be decided when he stands before U.S. District Judge Kirk E. Sherriff on June 23, 2025. The upcoming sentence will reflect not only the mandatory minimum but also statutory factors and Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which weigh various elements of Perez's case.
According to the details released by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Assistant U.S. Attorney Cody S. Chapple is prosecuting the case against Perez. The announcement underlines the ongoing efforts by authorities to clamp down on the drug trafficking that plagues streets and communities. As these kinds of busts accumulate, law enforcement officials and prosecutors are working together to stem the flow of narcotics through California.
