As National Consumer Protection Week kicks into full gear, residents of Cuyahoga County are receiving a weapon against fraud: a brand new "Scam Squad Guide." Courtesy of the Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs, this resource comes hot on the heels of a troubling surge in scamming activity within the region. Last year, scammers managed to pilfer at least $3.4 million from local pockets, nearly tripling the heist from the year before. Out of the 1,078 scam reports filed through the Scam Squad line or website, most individuals luckily escaped financial harm, but those less fortunate faced stiffer losses, with the average scam amount soaring from $11,228 to a staggering $31,844.
"The scams our residents face are growing more sophisticated," explained Sheryl Harris, Director of the Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs. The quote, given to the Cuyahoga County Department's official press release, indicates a shift in scammer strategy, as grandparent scams fall to the wayside and perpetrators increasingly pose as law enforcement or federal agents. The Scam Squad Guide aims to prepare the populace better, equipping them with vital know-how to thwart scammers' ever-evolving tactics.
Residents grappled with a veritable rogue's gallery of scam types throughout the past year. The five most reported categories include government imposters posing as law enforcement, company imposters conjuring fake account charges, and social media-savvy imposters looking to score payments or pitch bogus investments quickly. Rounding out the list are perennial sweepstakes and lottery scams and the relentless deluge of generic or abusive robocalls.
For those facing down the barrel of a potential scam, help is not out of reach. The Scam Squad extends an invitation to report suspicious activity or consult with an investigator. Cuyahoga residents can pick up the phone and dial 216-443-7226 or navigate straight to the Scam Squad website to swiftly seek assistance or submit a report. With a heightened sense of vigilance and a new guidebook in hand, the community moves forward, more fortified against the trickery of modern con artists.
