In a retail pivot, CVS Pharmacy has disclosed its intent to debut a new generation of stores across select U.S. markets within the forthcoming year. As NBC Chicago reported, these will be "smaller format" outlets, with a footprint under 5,000 square feet, primarily offering full-service pharmacies and a curated selection of over-the-counter products. CVS is positioning these locations to bolster healthcare service accessibility, meeting specific needs for prescribed medications, immunizations, and other pharmacist-provided care.

However, these more compact stores represent a broader strategy as CVS seeks to recalibrate its business, which includes launching at least 30 additional traditional stores in 2025. Some of these will be within Target locations. This move comes at a time of significant transition for the company, which experienced considerable financial headwinds in 2024 that led to a nearly halved stock price and a change at the helm, with former CEO Karen Lynch being succeeded by David Joyner, as the pharmacy juggernaut faced setbacks within its Medicaid and Medicare Advantage operations, according to NBC Chicago.

As CVS shrinks to refine, the pharmacy heavyweight is not alone in its industry overhaul. Drugstore rivals are grappling with fierce market competition from e-commerce giants like Amazon, brick-and-mortar titans like Target, and a rise in retail theft issues impacting their profitability. "By taking a customized approach to our footprint that is focused on the specific needs of the communities we serve, we’re continuing to strategically realign our pharmacy footprint to better support patient and ensure the right geographic coverage," a CVS spokesperson stated in comments to CNN, as per ABC7 News. This recalibration includes cutting loose more than a thousand underperforming stores and labor force reductions as part of the chain’s restructuring efforts.
