The Detroit Tigers have announced their lineup for the 2025 MLB Opening Day game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, marking an early start for the team yesterday. This game is set to be the earliest the Tigers have ever begun a season, with the prior record being March 28 from the years 2024 and 2019. According to CBS News Detroit, Tarik Skubal is the starting pitcher, leading a roster featuring players such as Andy Ibáñez, Gleyber Torres, and Riley Greene. The Dodgers, boasting a lineup with Blake Snell as the starting pitcher and stars like Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts, will face off against the Tigers in this game set to be aired on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET.
The Tigers will have to adapt quickly with injuries having to deal a blow to their ideal starting lineup. The team has officially had to release their Opening Day roster under somewhat strained circumstances. Eight players, including potential starters in the center field, find themselves on the injured list, forcing the Tigers to reassign positions and duties among the remaining players. This reshuffling has been especially notable, with infielders Javier Báez and Ryan Kreidler seeing time in outfield roles, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. Further complicating the Tigers' situation is the necessity for Spencer Torkelson to likely serve as the designated hitter for most games, with Colt Keith cementing his role at first base, thus keeping Torkelson out of the outfield.
After a remarkable playoff run last season, the Tigers want to carry that momentum forward despite their injury challenges. The team's playoff berth resulted from a fiery comeback, winning 31 of their final 44 games to claim a Wild Card spot, as highlighted by WXYZ. Unfortunately, the Cleveland Guardians halted their run in the American League Divisional Series. The Tigers' full roster for the 2025 season opener also includes seasoned pitchers such as Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize and the AL Cy Young holder, Tarik Skubal. However, the bullpen saw tough decisions being made, with Jason Foley being demoted to Triple-A following an ineffective performance, making room for players like Brenan Hanifee to step up.
The Tigers will return to Comerica Park on April 4 for their home Opening Day game against the Chicago White Sox. Tigers fans have expressed their anticipation of seeing how the team fares in their tough opening three-game series against the World Champions, and they will have the chance to do so both in person and on national television.
