The Southcenter Mall in Tukwila experienced a surge of police and fire department activity on Saturday evening after reports circulated of possible gunshots. However, Tukwila Police have since clarified the chaotic scene was the result of a physical altercation at the food court, not an active shooter. KIRO 7 reported that the mall was put on lockdown following the incident.
According to KING 5, the sounds that led people to believe there was a shooting came from chairs and metal divider poles being knocked over during the fight, producing loud noises that were similar to gunshots. The police statement noted, "We have had the same thing happen in the past in which people reported these sounds as shots when in fact they were not." No one was found with gunshot wounds, and no one was transported to the hospital, although blood was present at the scene.
Amidst the commotion, shoppers and employees were instructed to shelter in place while police meticulously searched the premises. Ultimately, it was confirmed that no shooting had occurred, and everyone inside was declared safe.
Police have not provided further details about the individuals involved in the altercation or what prompted the fight in the food court area.
