The Wisconsin Department of Justice released information regarding a Fond du Lac deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Feb. 24, which resulted in the death of 26-year-old Jesus Armando Mendez Berry. Mendez Berry, who had a felony warrant, had himself called the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office to turn himself in. WISN reported that a separate call from a citizen was also made, reporting a man fitting Mendez Berry's description and who could possibly be flashing a handgun in his waistband.
Upon encountering Mendez Berry on Cherrywood Drive, deputies claim he refused to comply with commands to show his hands, which led one deputy to deploy a non-lethal weapon. According to the FOX6 coverage, Mendez Berry was subsequently observed holding what appeared to be a firearm — later identified as a pellet gun — prompting a sheriff's office sergeant to shoot him. Despite efforts to save his life, Mendez Berry was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is spearheading the investigation into the incident with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies. As reported by FOX11, all involved agencies are cooperating fully with the DCI, which will present its findings to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney's Office upon completion of the investigation.
