Earlier today, a routine traffic stop abruptly escalated into a high-stakes pursuit, ending with an officer-involved shooting in Fort Collins. According to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, the confrontation began when a deputy pulled over a vehicle near Prospect Road and Riverside Avenue at around 2:45 a.m. The situation intensified when, after a brief exchange with the deputy, the adult female driver stepped out of the car and the adult male passenger took the wheel, speeding away from the scene.
The deputies, with lights and sirens blaring, trailed the fleeing car for several miles until the driver lost control on Terry Lake Road/Highway 1 and crashed into a ditch. The man then emerged wielding a knife before commandeering an unoccupied patrol car, using it to circle the deputies, who were positioned on foot. In response, one deputy discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office details. The injured suspect received first aid at the scene before being transferred to a hospital with grave injuries.
Following protocol, the Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has been activated to spearhead the investigation into the shooting. Fort Collins Police Services has been designated as the lead agency. As stated on the Larimer County website, CIRT's involvement is standard procedure in such incidents, to ensure an impartial examination of the events that transpired.
