To put an end to the dangerous tradition of celebratory gunfire, the Fort Worth Police Department is rolling out a new technology to pinpoint the location of gunshots. With holidays like the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve drawing closer, the city is on high alert for the illegal discharging of firearms, which poses a threat to public safety and carries hefty legal penalties.
The FWPD has proactively researched where to place the gunshot detection technology best. According to a report from the City of Fort Worth, designated areas within the city are now equipped with two types of cameras—the Flock and City pan tilt zoom (PTZ)—that work in tandem with the Flock Raven system. These devices are designed to collect suspect leads once a gunshot alert has been triggered.
What sets this system apart are the Acoem Gunshot Detection units, which are not only portable but can also be relocated to zones with surging gunfire reports. The sensors, linked to cameras, automatically direct them towards the source of the alert and simultaneously send the location data to the Real Time Crime Center for swift response.
Community participation is also a key part of the initiative. Residents are encouraged to celebrate without turning to firearms or fireworks – both of which are illegal within city limits. Those caught discharging a gun or handling fireworks risk jail time and fines up to $2,000, respectively. The public can report illegal activities via the MyFW App, by calling 817-392-4444, or through an online form provided by the city.
