Gaylord, Michigan has reached a historic milestone this winter, surpassing previous snowfall records with an impressive 185.9 inches, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord. This figure exceeds the previous record set in the 2006-07 season by just 0.3 inches, CBS News Detroit reports.
Additionally, FOX 17 highlighted the comparison, pointing out that Gaylord's snow total this season is nearly three times that of Grand Rapids. Located in northern Lower Michigan, Gaylord is about an hour's drive east of Traverse City.
For some historical context, while NWS records in Gaylord began in the 1998-99 season, earlier data indicates that the 1996-97 season saw an even higher snowfall total of 207.5 inches. As reported by MLive, there is a possibility that Gaylord could still reach that number before the winter season ends, although these figures are not part of the official NWS records.
Notably, Gaylord thrives because of its snowy climate, serving as a popular destination for ski and snowmobile enthusiasts. In the words of Paul Beachnau, executive director of the Gaylord Area Convention and Tourism Bureau, speaking to MLive, "It's truly been a great winter for our Gaylord resorts, downtown hotels, and eateries all sharing in the snow success."
Located in the center of over 500 miles of snowmobiling trails, Gaylord is known for its scenic routes that pass through snow-covered forests and small towns. The tourism board offers resources such as online trail maps, sled rental information, and details on accommodations. They also provide regular Snowmobile Trail reports with updates from trail groomers. One notable route is the North Central State Trail, which spans 62 miles from Gaylord to Mackinaw City, as MLive details.
