Empowering hospitals to go green, Governor Hochul announced yesterday a substantial $30 million investment through New York's Empire Building Challenge (EBC): Hospitals program. This initiative targets hospital facilities with funding aimed at electrification and energy efficiency upgrades, aligning with the state's aggressive climate agenda to decarbonize various economic sectors by 2050. Hospitals, pivotal in community health, are now at the forefront of adopting clean energy solutions, as per the Governor's office.
In a statement that's straightforward, "Hospitals are the cornerstones of our communities and this investment will drive efforts to make them cleaner, more efficient and safer for healthcare workers, patients and visitors as we work to electrify this critical sector of our economy," Governor Hochul stated, as obtained by the Governor's office. Managed by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the program is now offering up to $5 million for selected hospitals, aimed at bolstering the construction and installation of scalable, efficient, low-carbon solutions. These enhancements could make a tangible difference, especially for hospitals located in disadvantaged communities, ensuring fair access to the benefits of clean energy and augmented resilience.
The impetus behind this movement is clear: hospitals not only cure our maladies but also have a profound influence on the environmental health of their neighborhoods. The significance of such a shift in our medical bastions cannot be understated with respect to New York State's broader environmental commitments. Eligible hospitals should circle August 14, on their calendars—that's when proposals are due—and can find more details on NYSERDA’s website or by joining an informational webinar on March 18. Selected projects may also nab up to $50,000 for training on new equipment and building systems.
NYSERDA is no stranger to innovation, and it's evident through commitment remarks like those by President and CEO Doreen M. Harris, “Governor Hochul is taking bold steps to improve the health of New Yorkers through cleaner buildings across the state. Investing in scalable, energy efficient solutions that can be replicated at hospitals in New York, and nationwide, will not only lower their environmental impact but help to create more sustainable and resilient communities.” The overarching aim is to demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of reduction strategies that can be adopted by health facilities across the state. Moreover, the EBC Hospitals program dovetails with the State's Clean Energy Fund and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, notably bolstering the push toward decarbonization, as detailed by the same press release.
Responses to Hochul’s announcement have been supportive across the healthcare and political spectrum, acknowledging the vital role that hospitals play not only in healthcare but also in advancing New York’s commitment to cleaner, safer communities. “Hospital facilities are critical to providing health care services to our local communities in New York State. As we decarbonize our economy, we must support critical facilities as they transition to clean energy solutions and make sure our building systems are contributing to the health and environment for all New Yorkers,” State Senator Kevin Parker said, as noted by the Governor's office.
