Milwaukee County is taking a concrete step towards addressing its housing crisis with a new $2.5 million affordable housing project in Greenfield. The development, named Layton Preserve, will feature a 45-unit apartment community aimed at providing financial relief to seniors and families, as reported by WISN. Rising housing costs have put a strain on county resources, leading officials to prioritize affordable living options.
During a tour of the new development, County Executive David Crowley reflected on the widening disparities in housing access and its implications for the community's well-being. Celebrating the project's progress, he announced that seven townhome units are complete with 38 senior community apartments on the horizon. WISN highlighted the spaciousness and modern amenities of the townhomes, which are poised to offer rents varying from $475 to $1,080 to accommodate income levels ranging from 30 to 60% of the county's median income.
James Mathy, representing the County's Housing Authority, contextualized the project within the broader financial landscape facing such initiatives. "We're actually serving less people with the same amount of federal funding because rents are rising. So with housing authorities, your rent is going to increase, and you're actually serving less people because of the rent increases," Mathy told WISN. This underscores the critical timing for the introduction of affordable housing projects like Layton Preserve.
Reinforcing the significance of this investment, Crowley told CBS 58, "Affordable housing is critical in achieving better health, better education, and better economic outcomes, particularly at a time when Milwaukee County residents are facing significant challenges to housing access, as well as affordability." With the project underway, local leaders and residents hope for a momentum shift towards equitable living conditions for all.
As highlighted by FOX 6 Now, the project not only received federal funding, but also saw the collaboration between public and private sector partners. This joint effort signifies a shared commitment to counteracting the affordable housing shortage, and with the project's anticipated completion, a total of 45 households will gain access to much-needed affordable accommodations bolstering the county's stride toward economic diversity and stability.
