A 19-year-old from Haines City identified as Davian Walker has been arrested for a series of convenience store robberies across the Middle District of Florida, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. If convicted of these federal charges, Walker could face a significant stint behind bars, up to 20 years.
The arrest was announced by Acting United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney today, revealing details that, Walker allegedly executed five robberies within a tight span of less than three months. He purportedly used what seemed to be a handgun to intimidate store clerks into handing over cash, a risky move that upped the ante on his alleged crimes.
As detailed by the Justice Department, the clues leading to Walker's apprehension materialized via his own digital footprint and the wheels he set in motion — his phone number, and the vehicle used during the crime spree. This digital trail became breadcrumbs that the agents followed, ultimately cornering Walker shortly after his final act in Titusville earlier yesterday.
An indictment in such cases is not equivalent to a guilty verdict, but rather a formal accusation of criminal conduct, to which Walker is presumed innocent until proven otherwise. To piece together Walker's alleged criminal patchwork, a coalition of law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, among others, came together. Assistant United States Attorney Candace Garcia Rich, will carry the mantle of prosecution.
This arrest is a microcosm within a larger campaign, dubbed Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative marshaling considerable resources with the aim of curtailing illegal immigration, cartels, and violent crime. By unifying the efforts of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods, the initiative strives to install a barrier against the encroachment of transnational crime.
