Houston residents, prepare for a windy week as gusty conditions increase with the arrival of a cold front. The city is currently experiencing winds from the south between 15 to 20 mph, with gusts that could reach as high as 35 mph today, according to the National Weather Service.
Wind advisories are in effect for much of Southeast Texas through this afternoon, as spring months typically bring increased winds to Houston. By midday, sustained winds could be as high as 20 mph, and gusts are anticipated to approach 30 mph. The Houston Chronicle reports that gusts could increase to 35-40 mph across Greater Houston through 7 p.m. today.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, a cold front will move in early in the morning. While there’s a slight chance of a stray shower before mid-morning, particularly along and east of Interstate 45, the front is expected to pass without much disruption. After it moves through, northwesterly winds gusting up to 25 mph will usher in drier air and clearer skies by the afternoon.
Temperatures in Houston, which will hover near 80 degrees on Wednesday, will take a noticeable drop by Thursday to around 70 degrees. As the winds settle, morning temperatures are predicted to dip into the upper 40s to lower 50s across Greater Houston on Thursday and Friday. The city will warm up slightly on Friday, with a high near 74 degrees, and even more so by Saturday reaching 82 degrees, before another cold front arrives on Sunday.
The upcoming weather changes are typical for the region’s climate, as March is the second windiest month in Houston, with an average wind speed just 0.2 mph less than April. Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest forecasts and any potential advisories as the week unfolds.
