A man has been apprehended and charged with the murder connected to a shooting that took place last September on the Southwest Freeway. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Erik Humberto Gomez Gante, is now facing murder charges and was arrested earlier today, according to a news release from the City of Houston.
The case unfolded on September 7, 2024, when officers were initially called to respond to a vehicular accident. Detectives from the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division found that a red Ford F-150 had left the road and collided with a power line pole. It was at this scene that the Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the vehicle's driver, 49-year-old Miguel Rodriguez, deceased. However, it was only after the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences examined the body that they discovered Rodriguez had been fatally shot.
For months, the investigation into this incident appeared to have reached a standstill with no apparent witnesses or suspects. That was until further police work led to the identification of Gomez Gante as the suspect. Following this breakthrough, "the Harris County District Attorney's Office was contacted and a murder warrant was issued," according to details released by the City of Houston. Gomez Gante's capture was carried out by members of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.
