In a broad-ranging effort to enforce immigration laws and target criminal activity, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested 646 undocumented immigrants in the Houston area, an operation that netted 543 criminals and seven gang members. This week-long initiative spanned from February 23 to March 2 and included the cooperation of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, according to a statement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The arrests were focused on individuals charged or convicted of criminal offenses while illegally in the U.S. For U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and its agents, their aim was to significantly bolster public safety and security. Among those detained, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation managed to directly capture multiple persons involved in serious offenses, including 140 charged with violent crimes such as aggravated assault and domestic violence, 34 with sex offenses, and 52 with narcotics violations.

Chad Plantz, the Special Agent in Charge for ICE Homeland Security Investigations in Houston, highlighted the collaborative nature of the operation. He said, "In just one week working alongside our counterparts from federal, state and local law enforcement, ICE HSI special agents successfully executed 71 criminal arrest warrants and made 554 administrative arrests that included illegally present human smugglers, gang members, human traffickers, child sex offenders, drug traffickers and weapons traffickers." He went on to assert the safety gains for local communities and the broader national security implications. Plantz's comments, which emphasized the crackdown on transnational criminal organizations, were detailed in a press release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Collaboration was key in this multi-agency operation with agencies including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the FBI. Additionally, the DEA, Texas Department of Public Safety, Diplomatic Security Service, U.S. Marshals Service, along with other agencies, all played a role in supporting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's efforts to aggressively identify, arrest, and charge those implicated in criminal activities. The combined strength of these agencies aimed to send a clear message to deter crime and promote lawful behaviour within the region.
