The Justice Department has seized approximately $201,400 in cryptocurrency, disrupting a Hamas-related operation. According to court documents, a group chat on an encrypted platform linked to Hamas provided at least 17 cryptocurrency addresses for supporters to funnel money into. These funds were routed through multiple virtual currency transactions and exchanges in an effort to launder over $1.5 million since October 2024.
The Justice Department stated that the funds were sent into an operational wallet and laundered through a series of virtual currency exchanges and transactions, using suspected financiers and over-the-counter brokers. U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr., Sue J. Bai from the National Security Division, and FBI Special Agent in Charge Raul Bujanda announced the successful intervention. The Justice Department emphasized that more than a million dollars were cycled through this laundering system.
This action highlights the efforts of U.S. authorities to combat terror financing through digital platforms. The decentralized and anonymous nature of cryptocurrencies presents challenges, but this seizure demonstrates the growing ability of federal agencies to track and intercept illegal transactions.
Investigative methods have advanced to identify those behind the cryptocurrency transactions. Supporters of Hamas around the world were given a rotating set of at least 17 cryptocurrency addresses, according to court documents. This effort underscores the commitment to blocking terror-related financial operations, particularly those utilizing the internet.
