The Kent County Animal Shelter has issued a scam alert to pet owners regarding a new fraudulent scheme making rounds in the community. Perpetrators are exploiting the bond between owners and their lost pets by masquerading as the shelter and soliciting money for non-existent emergency surgeries.
Scammers have been cloning the shelter's phone number, duping pet owners by claiming that their lost pets need urgent surgical care. A community member recounted receiving such a call, where she was pressed to immediately fork over more than $4,000 for her missing cat's alleged medical treatment. "Scammers are everywhere and they take advantage of anyone they can," said Angela Hollinshead, director of the Kent County Animal Shelter, as reported by WOODTV. She thanked those who verified with the shelter before proceeding with any dubious requests.
Hollinshead pointed out the potential dangers of sharing information about lost pets on social media. While it has proven beneficial in reuniting owners with their pets, it also serves as a hunting ground for scammers seeking convincing calls by gathering details from these public posts. The Kent County Animal Shelter advisory on its Facebook page further educates the community on the importance of confirming unexpected financial requests with trusted sources.
