According to a recent announcement on the city's official website, the City of Kissimmee is in the process of appointing a new permanent Chief of Police. This follows a period of interim leadership that has seen substantial reforms and improvements within the Kissimmee Police Department (KPD).
Since October 31, 2024, Robert Anzueto has been leading the KPD as Interim Chief, during which time the department has embarked on several initiatives to enhance accountability and transparency. Under Anzueto's direction, the KPD has tackled issues raised by a Grand Jury Presentment, specifically in response to a use-of-force incident that involved former Officer Andrew Baseggio. Anzueto, whose long-term commitment remains with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, is noted to have been instrumental in boosting the department's morale and integrating new policies and training programs. In a statement obtained by the City of Kissimmee, Anzueto remarked, "The men and women of KPD have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to keeping Kissimmee safe, and I am proud of the progress we’ve made."
The search for a new permanent Chief includes two prime candidates: Charles “Chuck” Broadway, the current Chief of Police for the City of Clermont, and Orlando Rolon, the retired Chief of Police for the City of Orlando. City Manager Mike Steigerwald emphasized the selection process’s focus on community needs, leadership quality, and the continuation of reforms started by Anzueto.
Reforms within the KPD have been extensive, addressing training on mental health crises, updating policies related to internal investigations, and strengthening the internal affairs division by adding a Civilian Internal Affairs Manager and two sergeants as investigators to better internal accountability. "We are looking for someone who will lead with transparency, build on the momentum of reform, and ensure that KPD remains a department that the community continues to trust and respect," Steigerwald stated, per the city's news portal.
