Las Vegas is once again grappling with the aftermath of an officer-involved shooting, the second of its kind this year. Officer Larry Jones of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has been identified as the officer involved in last Saturday's shooting that occurred in the 6100 block of Allen Cove Court. Officer Jones, 27, has been a part of the LVMPD since 2019 and is currently serving in the Community Safety Division, Summerlin Area Command. He was placed on paid administrative leave pending review, as reported by LVMPD's official release.
The incident began with a distress call at approximately 1:52 p.m., alerting officers to a potentially suicidal armed man. Responding officers arrived on the scene, at which point a gunshot was heard from inside the house. A male then came out carrying a firearm, and when verbal commands failed to deter him from pointing the gun at officers, Officer Jones discharged his weapon, striking the individual. The LVMPD's account further details that the man was attended to by medical personnel but was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The shootings this year have triggered an automatic internal review, as required by LVMPD policy. The department has been transparent, releasing the officer's identity within 48 hours. Captain Esmeralda Boveda explained the protocol in a media briefing, and her statement is available online for those seeking more details.
To aid in the ongoing investigations, LVMPD has made it known that anyone with information pertinent to the case can come forward. They highlight the options for preserving anonymity, be it through contacting the LVMPD Force Investigation Team or by utilizing the Crime Stoppers platform.
