A recent update from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has shed light on the tragic outcome of a vehicle-pedestrian collision that occurred late last month. As confirmed by the Clark County Coroner's Office, the pedestrian involved in the accident on West Hacienda Avenue west of South Decatur Boulevard has died from his injuries. This marks Las Vegas's 34th traffic-related fatality for the year 2025. Details surrounding the incident were provided by a press release issued by the LVMPD.
The initial incident took place on February 21, when a Tesla Model 3 collided with a 63-year-old male pedestrian. The man, who has not yet been publicly named pending notification of kin, was crossing the street on a mobility scooter outside of a designated crosswalk, placing him directly in the path of the oncoming vehicle. The investigation by the LVMPD Collision Investigation Section is ongoing, but so far, no signs of impairment have been found with relation to the driver, 27-year-old Benjamin Chung from Irvine, California.
The LVMPD's reports state that after the collision, emergency services immediately transported the victim to UMC-Trauma, where he received treatment for what the hospital staff initially determined to be life-threatening injuries. Sadly, the victim's fight for life ended a week later, resulting in the sobering update provided by authorities. The tragic turn of events has brought renewed attention to the safety concerns for pedestrians and the importance of adhering to traffic laws and using marked crosswalks.
The driver, Benjamin Chung, was reported to have stayed at the scene following the accident and has been cooperating with law enforcement officials. His Tesla Model 3, a vehicle known for its advanced safety features, was involved in a fatal collision that raises questions about the interaction between technology-driven vehicles and pedestrian safety on busy city streets.
