The gates of John Ball Zoo have opened today for its 134th season, offering Grand Rapids a variety of wildlife experiences and new attractions. The zoo, home to over 2,000 animals, introduces two new lions, Amara and Upepo, along with a warthog. Visitors will still find popular animals like the red pandas and snow leopards, and can also take part in events such as the Grand Rapids Lantern Festival and the family-friendly Wild Strides 5K race.
Decked out with several new attractions and activities, the zoo offers an interactive exhibit, coined "The Power of Pollinators: Tiny Creatures That Make BIG Things Happen!", opening in July. Featuring animatronic bees and butterflies, the exhibit aims to shine a light on these small but vital creatures, as stated by FOX 17. To escape the summer heat, parents and children can seek comfort in the air-conditioned penguin and fish exhibits, highlighting the zoo's family-friendly atmosphere.
Andy McIntyre from John Ball Zoo emphasized the zoo's enthusiasm for improvement, "We are always trying to advance the zoo and always improve the experience for our guests, for our staff, for our animals, and this year is no different," he told WOODTV. March hours for the zoo are 10 a.m to 4 p.m on weekdays, with extended hours from 9 a.m to 5 p.m on the weekends.
In addition to the animals and exhibits, the zoo has upcoming developments, including a planned African expansion and a new sea lion exhibit at the entrance, featuring an underwater viewing area currently under construction, as reported by Mix 957GR. The Lantern Festival, scheduled from April 9 to June 15, will transform the zoo into a nighttime display, making it a popular time of year to visit. The zoo will be illuminated during this period, offering a unique experience for visitors.
