A tragic incident unfolded on the Sonoma Coast where a man lost his life after being swept away by a powerful wave amidst a high surf warning that the National Weather Service had issued. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office reported responding to a water rescue at Gerstle Cove around 10:45 a.m., where the man was found distressed after being carried out to sea by a wave while standing on coastal rocks.
According to a social media post by Sonoma Sheriff, the victim was located by the Henry 1 helicopter and was quickly flown to land for emergency care, despite the efforts of emergency personnel who administered CPR, the individual was pronounced dead at 11:26 am. While the rescue unfolded a companion was also found on the rocks in need of help, and was subsequently rescued.
Compounding the danger, the North Sonoma Coast Fire Department indicated that the two individuals were fishing on the rocks when they were caught off-guard by a high wave. This scenario underscores the repeated warnings from authorities during such conditions as the National Weather Service had alerted the public of the potential for sneaker waves, which can run up unexpectedly, overtaking beaches and rocky outcroppings and stressing the risk posed by rip currents.
Information provided by CBS News states that the high surf warning will remain in effect until 9 p.m. Monday, with wave heights potentially reaching up to 20 feet. Such warnings are critical as they advise the public of the dangers and prevent tragedies. Gerstle Cove, the site of the accident, is located within Salt Point State Park, roughly 100 miles north of San Francisco, off Highway 1.
