Downtown Manhattan's Tesla showroom served as the gathering spot for demonstrators strongly opposing Elon Musk's role in the "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE). Around 300 protesters displayed signs with messages like "Don't Buy a Swasticar" and "No Dictators in the USA." The scene unfolded yesterday afternoon, and it came to a head when nine individuals were arrested for actions ranging from trespassing to a minor violation. According to amNewYork, demonstrators gathered to express their opposition to Musk's perceived unchecked influence over the American government.
Arrested during the protest, longtime Rise and Resist member Jamie Bauer issued a resolute statement, "We will use every non-violent method in the book to stop your cuts in their tracks," and characterizing Musk's future place in history alongside "oligarchs who enabled Hitler and Mussolini," as reported by amNewYork.
The protest was organized by Rise and Resist, highlighting Musk's alleged alignment with former President Trump and raising concerns about a potential political coup. Brian Flanagan and Shawn Haugen, a couple from New Rochelle who attended the protest, shared similar worries about Musk's influence. "He basically bought himself a seat at the table," Flanagan told New York Daily News. Haugen added, "we can't complain if we don't do anything."
Inside the Tesla showroom, two protesters managed to gain entry before being arrested. Zack Winestine, a West Village filmmaker and one of those arrested inside, claimed to New York Daily News they were simply "exercising our constitutional right to petition our government," which they believe is now personified by Musk. The situation intensified outside as six protesters held a sit-in at the entrance, remaining in place despite police orders to leave.
Protesters directed their frustration at Musk for the considerable influence he has gained through former President Trump, particularly in curbing government spending and exerting control over federal agencies. Reports suggest that Musk's power has enabled him to freeze funds, dismiss federal employees, and dismantle agencies like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Adding a personal note to the demonstration, Professor Naomi Braine of Brooklyn College spoke of her students, most of whom are immigrants' children reliant on financial aid, now under threat, which she described as the "American nightmare" to amNewYork. According to organizers, the protest's size surpassed expectations, confirming a sentiment of widespread frustration toward Musk's growing political clout and the policies associated with his leadership at DOGE.
