Residents in Marin County might notice smoke rising next Thursday as Marin County Parks and the local fire department prepare to burn piles of cut vegetation in the Maurice Thorner Preserve and San Geronimo Park. The scheduled burns are meant to manage vegetation and reduce wildfire risk, and operations are slated to run from post-morning hours until dusk, officials said.
The planned burns are part of a strategic move to quickly combat invasive pine trees and the enthusiastic encroachment of fir trees, aiming to decrease potential fuel for wildfires. "Smoke may be visible in the area after 10:00 a.m. Operations will conclude before sunset," announced a social media post from Marin County Parks. They have also mentioned that the Thorner Ridge Trail will be closed during the operations.
Officials are asking the public not to dial 9-1-1 about the smoke so that emergency lines are not tied up, "Please refrain from calling 9-1-1 to report the smoke in this area and ensure emergency lines remain available for urgent calls." Residents affected by smoke and interested parties can head to Emergency.MarinCounty.gov for real-time updates on this and future planned burns, including precise locations and schedules, as per Marin County Parks.
