At the Raleigh Convention Center this past Saturday, Mayor Janet Cowell took to the stage to deliver her first State of the City Address. In front of a gathering of over 100 attendees, Cowell proudly recapped her City Council's achievements during their initial 100 days and laid out a blueprint for the capital city's path forward, as reported by the city's official news release.
Highlighting the critical role that cities play in fostering growth and innovation, Cowell emphasized housing, homelessness, public safety, and improving the overall quality of life in Raleigh. "Cities are more consequential than ever," she stated, according to the City of Raleigh news release. The Mayor also remarked on the importance of community, asserting that in an uncertain world, cities are where people find a semblance of belonging.
The event wasn't just speeches; entertainment was provided in a melodious capacity by the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources band. Reflecting the modern era’s digital access to information, the address was also streamed on Raleigh's YouTube page for those unable to attend or interested in revisiting the Mayor's words.
