Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is warning residents during National Consumer Protection Week to be on the lookout for "pig butchering" scams. These scams are malicious concoctions that combine the deceit of romance scams with the lure of fraudulent investments. According to the reassured consumer alert, these scams intensify as cryptocurrency becomes mainstream.
Dana Nessel cautioned, "Just as with any major financial decision, consumers should research the investments they are considering, avoid people or entities demanding upfront payment in cryptocurrency, be wary of promises of large, quick returns, and refrain from mixing online dating with any investment advice." This warning emphasizes the need for individuals to remain skeptical and thoroughly investigate before engaging in financial transactions, particularly involving crypto assets, as per the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
The Michigan Attorney General highlighted the threat of these schemes in an episode of her new podcast, "Pantsuits and Lawsuits," joined by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. They spoke with Alex Juarez and Mark Fetterhoff from AARP, discussing strategies for recognizing and shielding oneself from fraud. "We were glad to talk with experts from the AARP, who are on the front lines protecting seniors from pig butchering scams," Nessel said in a statement obtained by the Michigan Department of Attorney General. According to the disclosure, AARP provides valuable support through its ElderWatch program, where experienced volunteers counsel residents on financial concerns and recovery post-scam.
The scam usually begins with a perpetrator establishing a fake online persona and eagerly contacting targets through various channels, such as social media, WhatsApp, Tinder, and even text messages disguised as inadvertent communications or mistaken identities. The fraudsters devise methods to perpetuate conversation, slowly weaving into targets' lives while feigning to be a friend or romantic interest. Over time, they stealthily broach the topic of cryptocurrency investment, leading victims to a false trading platform where initial modest gains are projected to ensnare trust and larger monetary commitments.
