In a case that has caught the attention of Maryland residents, Middletown woman Cheryl Leigh Gray, 50, was sentenced on Monday for a felony theft charge involving the deception of a friend to pay off court-ordered restitution from a separate theft conviction, as stated by FOX Baltimore. The Honorable Julia A. Minner, presiding over the Circuit Court for Frederick County, delivered the sentence, which included a five-year prison term with all but 60 days suspended, and ordered Gray to pay $65,000 in restitution to the victim.
The full account of the events provided by Mocoshow reveals that Gray, after an earlier conviction related to her work as an insurance producer, had paid $305,995.55 in restitution before engaging in the theft against her friend. Attorney General Anthony G. Brown acknowledged the case on April 5, 2024, and Gray's recent sentencing comes after a guilty plea entered on February 10 to a felony theft charge ranging from $25,000 to $100,000.
In recognition of those who worked on the case, Attorney General Brown extended gratitude to his Criminal Division, naming Division Chief Katie Dorian, Fraud and Corruption Unit Chief Alex Huggins, and Senior Assistant Attorney General Timothy Lake for their roles in prosecution. In addition, acknowledgments were given to Maryland Insurance Administration Forensic Auditor Suzzanne Jones, Investigator William Wagner, and the State’s Attorney for Frederick County J. Charles Smith III.
