Mill Valley is striking a harmonious chord in community collaboration, with the City of Mill Valley and the Mill Valley School District finalizing a new Joint Use Agreement over Friends Field. After more than a year of consideration and discussion, the authorities have landed on common ground, ensuring that the Mill Valley Middle School field will continue to serve as a beloved space for students, families, and community gatherings, according to the City of Mill Valley.
The agreement, stretching over 5.5 years, puts into place a shared use and management framework for the field. "We appreciate the District's partnership in reaching this important agreement," Mayor Stephen Burke told the City of Mill Valley News. He added, "It reflects the mutual commitment of both the City and the School District to provide clarity on how we work together to care for and manage this treasured space." Crucially, the agreement prioritizes the middle school's access to the field during school hours while allowing community use during alternate times.
School Board President Sharon Nakatani echoed the necessity to prioritize student activities. "Ensuring that our students' needs come first is our top priority," Nakatani said, per the City of Mill Valley. Yet the agreement also facilitates community enjoyment of Friends Field, providing a setting for casual recreation and events like the Mill Valley Music Festival when school is not in session.
