Con artists are using new phone scams to trick people into paying fake fines. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office warned on Facebook that scammers are leaving voicemails from spoofed numbers that look like the sheriff’s office. Be cautious and don't fall for these tricks.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has gone out of their way to highlight the brazenness of these scams, stressing that "NEITHER WE NOR ANY OTHER LEGITIMATE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY WILL EVER PHONE AND THREATEN ARREST IF YOU DON’T PAY "fines" for supposedly missing jury duty or having a warrant or being "tagged" in a DNA test, etc." It's critical to understand that these falsehoods are nothing but attempts to exploit fear and confusion to illegally obtain money.
Scammers are demanding fines of $2,500 or $2,700, cloaking their true identities behind the authority of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. The office's response to these fraudulent activities is not just passive caution, but a proactive call for victims to step forward. They encourage those who've been swindled by these impostors to call the sheriff's office directly, or reach out to state or federal authorities, with provided contact details to ensure support and assistance in resolving their cases.
