Weather patterns are constantly shifting, and it seems the Midwest is set to experience a mix of clouds and rearranging temperatures over the next week. Residents in the Columbus and Cincinnati area, as well as spots extending to Wilmington and beyond, should be prepped for a sequence of atmospheric shifts. A weak cold front crossed the area this morning, which, according to the National Weather Service, brings a short-lived high-pressure stint tonight. Don't get too comfy. Another cold front is quickly on its tail, set to move through Sunday afternoon and evening.
We're looking at 'compact short wave tracking' that's hastily making its way east this morning, having brought with it a few light showers – though nothing to write home about. With the cold front, temperatures could take a slight dip, particularly in the northern regions of the forecast area. The day began with an abundance of clouds. However, diminishing skies are expected in the Tri-State by early afternoon, with a broader clearing throughout the day. But, this break is a short one, as high clouds are set to increase in advance of another short wave. It looks like the southern counties could see a rather more generous dose of rainfall, yet it's predicted to remain below one inch.
Into the night, high pressure will crawl over the region, and by Sunday, we're slated for a "more defined cold front," as per the National Weather Service's area forecast discussion. Expect widespread showers thanks to the good moisture transport and the front's movement, with accompanying temperatures stretching from the mid-20s in central Ohio's rural spots to the upper 20s and lower 30s elsewhere. Don't get your hopes up for balmy weather on Sunday; forecasted highs will hover between the upper 40s and upper 50s.
As Sunday night rolls around, the front should be moving through the area, with any remaining rainfall likely plaguing northern Kentucky and central and southern Ohio, eventually giving way to drier conditions behind the front. Surface pressure from the north keeps things on the cooler side. The midweek may offer a slight reprieve with height rises and southwesterly surface flow indicating warmer temperatures come Thursday. However, clouds and potential showers linger due to another disturbance. As Friday approaches, the forecast stays on the warmer side, possibly cracking into the 70s for parts of the area, despite continuous rainfall prospects, which are expected to increase as the weekend creeps closer, asserts the National Weather Service.
For those navigating the skies, Saturday's forecast promised a period of MVFR ceilings and potential showers early in the day, eventually clearing by 15Z. "West northwest winds will gust above 20 kt during the day and then diminish by 00Z," the Forecast Discussion details. Pilots can expect to face high clouds overnight as the weather rolls into Sunday, with conditions liable to turn towards MVFR again by Sunday afternoon and evening and gusts reaching upwards of 30 kt come Monday. Safe travels to those up in the air — and on the ground, don't pack away your rain gear just yet.
