Modesto Police Intensify Traffic Enforcement to Improve Motorcycle Safety, Backed by State and National FundsSource: Facebook/Modesto Police Department

In an effort to curb motor vehicle accidents involving motorcycles, the Modesto Police Department is ramping up its enforcement operations today, with extra officers on patrol looking for traffic violations by drivers and motorcycle riders. According to the Modesto Police Department social media post, the operation runs from 9 am to 5 pm and focuses on the top primary crash factors for motorcycles including unsafe speed, improper turning, and right-of-way violations among others.

Speeding is the leading cause of motorcycle crashes, making up about a third of all incidents statewide. This highlights the need for more monitoring, especially on Modesto's roads. To help reduce accidents, the department has shared safety tips for both drivers and motorcyclists. Drivers should check mirrors and blind spots, signal before changing lanes, keep a safe distance, and give space at intersections. Motorcyclists are advised to wear DOT-approved helmets, use reflective tape, keep lights on during the day, signal lane changes early, and be cautious when lane splitting.

The initiative is not standing alone; another motorcycle safety enforcement operation is scheduled for April as the Modesto Police Department continues its efforts to improve road safety. Modesto Police Department's Facebook post reveals that the program is supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, funneled through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which evidences a combined commitment from local and national entities to address and diminish the hazards faced by motorcyclists and drivers alike.
