Following a violent confrontation in Monessen, 21-year-old Jay Din Eleam is now in custody after authorities successfully ended a stand-off that lasted several hours. According to WPXI, the incident began to unfold this morning when police attempted to serve a search warrant on Eleam, who had barricaded himself inside a Leeds Avenue residence following a shooting the previous night.
The situation prompted the closure of surrounding roads and a temporary shutdown of local school operations. Per WTAE, the incident was initially triggered by an altercation that escalated into an exchange of gunfire between Eleam and another individual. The victim, who received a gunshot wound to the forehead, was described as conscious and alert by police and is expected to survive after being taken to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital and then flown to a Pittsburgh hospital.
Authorities, learning that Eleam was possibly armed and hidden in the attic, brought in a SWAT team. This resulted in a barricade that stretched for nearly five hours. Eleam faced multiple charges, including attempted homicide and aggravated assault. As reported by CBS News, he also had active warrants for his arrest.
The stand-off ended when Eleam attempted an escape but was apprehended around 9 a.m. SERT officers from the Pennsylvania State Police were called to support the operation. According to the Monessen School District's social media page, the school district had announced a 2-hour delay due to the active police incident.
