The Montgomery County Council has a busy day today, with five committee meetings scheduled to tackle a range of issues from infrastructure funding to the county's education challenges, according to a press release. The Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee kicks off at 9:30 a.m. to deliberate on creating an Infrastructure Funding Workgroup, a collective aimed at sourcing strategies to fund the county’s burgeoning infrastructure needs.
Notably, the Health and Human Services Committee is set to discuss a supplemental appropriation of nearly $1.3 million for the State Opioid Response IV Grant and another $2.9 million for a Behavioral Health Crisis Stabilization Center and Mobile Crisis Team pilot, while a joint meeting with the Education and Culture Committee at 10 a.m. will review capital budgets for childcare renovations, the Council Office Building will serve as the venue for these pivotal gatherings that are likely to steer the county's immediate spending and careful planning for future needs, says Council President Kate Stewart and Council Vice President Will Jawando chair their respective committees.
Later in the afternoon, the Education and Culture Committee will receive updates regarding attendance and engagement at Montgomery County Public Schools — a critical issue given its correlation with student achievements and graduation rates, and particularly its disproportionate effect on vulnerable student populations. Finally, the Economic Development Committee, as per Montgomery County, will take a close look at the performance of the County’s business incubators as part of the fiscal year 2025 budget follow-up to bolster local business growth.
