Montgomery County's annual Bike to Work Day is set for May 15, encouraging residents to bike as a clean and healthy commuting option. Registration is now open for those wanting to participate in the regional event, which aligns with national efforts to promote greener commuting.
According to the Montgomery County release, the first 18,000 participants will receive a free t-shirt and be entered into a raffle for a new bike. "With more people in our region returning to in-office work, Bike to Work Day is a good opportunity to explore a new way to travel," said County Executive Marc Elrich. The county continues to invest in bike lanes and infrastructure to make cycling a safer option for residents.
The event will feature 14 pit stops in Montgomery County, offering refreshments, music, and local vendor displays. There will be free raffle prizes at each stop, including a grand prize for a new bike. Both leisure riders and commuters are invited to participate.
Co-organized by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, Bike to Work Day promotes bicycling as an alternative to car commuting. "Bike to Work Day lets us highlight a greener, healthier alternative to commuting by car," said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin in the same release. Montgomery County currently has over 100 miles of bike lanes and continues to expand its bike infrastructure, with bike racks on all Ride On buses and Capital Bikeshare stations at 77 locations.
Residents can register for the event and learn more about the county's cycling initiatives at the MCDOT-sponsored pit stops.
