In a nod to Women's History Month, the Montgomery County Commission for Women, in collaboration with other local institutions, has called upon residents to enter its eighth annual Girl Power Contest. This year's challenge asks participants to envision media that can bolster the confidence and ambition of young girls and women. Specifically, these creative submissions should address how books, films, or any form of media would work to inspire and empower their female audience.
Open to individuals aged five and up, the contest encourages a variety of creative expressions, from short stories and poems to drawings. Each entrant is entitled to a single submission, which must be in by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 31, according to the official announcement by Montgomery County. All written works are capped at 500 words, and entrants should not forget to include essential information such as their full name, contact details, and, if applicable, their grade and school.
It's a strategic move, recognizing how profoundly media can shape self-perceptions and the wider societal narratives about gender roles. By activating the imagination and creativity of the county's residents, the CFW aims to generate a diverse range of narratives and role models that reflect the actual potential and complexity of women's lives.
By highlighting the significant impact media can have on personal development and societal views, this contest offers an active response to the often-narrow portrayals of girls and women in popular culture. Contest results, to be announced at a later date.
