In a move to make commuting less of a financial burden, Montgomery County unveiled the FareShare program, designed to reimburse employees up to $325 a month for public transit. According to an announcement from the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), this initiative aims to mitigate traffic woes and cut down on emissions by encouraging the use of Ride On bus, Metrobus, Metrorail, MTA Commuter bus, or MARC train, and even supports those opting for vanpools, as long as their workplace is within Montgomery County borders.
County Executive Marc Elrich emphasized the program's financial and environmental benefits, "The FareShare program makes using transit more affordable while helping reduce traffic and emissions," he stated, as reported by Montgomery County Government's official portal. This push for alternative travel coincides with the federal government's return to in-person work, urging more companies to make public transportation a viable option for employees. The program not only offers a financial perk for employees but also allows employers to reap tax benefits while standing by a sustainable cause.
In sync with the IRS's increase of the pre-tax limit for commuting benefits from $300 to $325 this January, the FareShare program maximizes the new cap minus a $25 monthly employer contribution. MCDOT Director Chris Conklin actively encourages local businesses to join the effort, reinforcing that the program is accessible to all Montgomery County workers. He assured MCDOT Commuter Services staff is ready to help employers set up the program free of charge.
Small business owners like Erik Donald of Main Engineering in Silver Spring have backed the program, citing significant savings and stress reduction for employees who switch from driving to public transit. "FareShare allows me to offer competitive commuter benefits at a significantly reduced cost," he told Montgomery County Government's official portal. The program also extends to offering a pre-tax payroll deduction benefit for employees, adding further economic incentives for both parties involved.
Moreover, the inclusion of a state tax credit that covers 50% of the employer's monthly contributions adds another layer of allure to the program, potentially halving the cost for business owners who opt in. To further tempt participation, MCDOT has planned incentives such as a $50 weekly gift card drawing and a grand prize of a $500 gift card for employees who complete a travel survey – all part of the county's campaign to trim traffic congestion.
