Montgomery County Council Vice President Will Jawando has announced a new bill aimed at helping federal employees impacted by recent layoffs. The proposed legislation, Expedited Bill 10-25, seeks to offer displaced federal workers an opportunity to quickly re-enter the workforce with the county government, as per the Montgomery County Council release.
The bill aims to address the job losses that affected over a thousand residents under the previous federal administration. It proposes a hiring preference for these workers, allowing them to be swiftly re-employed while utilizing their experience in local government positions. The goal is to support affected families and strengthen the county’s workforce.
The bill is scheduled for introduction in mid-March, with the support of several other councilmembers, including Andrew Friedson, Kristin Mink, Laurie-Anne Sayles, Marilyn Balcombe, and Council President Kate Stewart.
A news conference will be held today at noon at the Council Office Building to introduce the bill. Jawando, along with cosponsors and representatives from WorkSource Montgomery, will provide details on how the bill aims to benefit the local workforce. RSVPs are required for location specifics, as the council focuses on transparency and community involvement.
