The City of North Las Vegas is launching an innovative initiative aimed at supporting young adults involved in the justice system. The Youth Opportunities for Understanding, Transformation, and Healing (Y.O.U.T.H.) Court Program is designed to assist individuals aged 18-24 by offering a range of support services, including workforce development, mentorship, and re-entry planning, as reported by the City of North Las Vegas.
Launched in 2024, the program is a collaborative effort between North Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Employment Project, and Lighthouse Charities. Its goal is to reduce early interactions with the court system and lower reoffending rates while helping young adults reintegrate into society. The program focuses on high-risk individuals, offering them a chance to make positive, lasting changes in their lives. Support services include housing, education, wellness, and employment. Since its inception, more than 14 young individuals have already participated in the Y.O.U.T.H. program.
Potential participants are pinpointed at various junctures such as their inaugural court appearance, following an arrest, or via a referral from existing City programs, after which a screening process establishes their eligibility for the wide-ranging assistance on offer. The program provides participants with a range of resources, including job placements, childcare referrals, trade certifications, and essential items like bus passes, to support their reintegration into society, as outlined by the city initiative.
The financial support for this initiative is provided by the State of Nevada Department of Sentencing Policy through the Nevada Local Justice Reinvestment Grant. This investment supports the program’s focus on rehabilitation and reflects a statewide effort to address the challenges faced by young adults involved in the justice system. It aims to provide a cost-effective alternative to reincarceration while offering individuals a chance to reintegrate into society.
